چکیده

This habilitation thesis presents a series of contributions in the field of digital geometry processing. These contributions offer concepts and algorithms for surface reconstruction, surface approximation, quadrangle surface tiling and isotropic tetrahedron mesh generation. The narrative aims at highlighting the common feature shared among our contributions: we adopt a variational methodology throughout this document, in the sense that we tackle each digital geometric problem by casting it as an energy minimization so that low levels of these energies correspond to good solutions of the problem. The main motivation behind such formulations is a significantly increased quality and robustness, sometimes at the price of heavier computations than greedy algorithms. The data structures and concepts involved in our work lie between computational geometry, geometric computing, and numerical computing. A general summary also provides a vision of the many remaining challenges in the field. 7 te l-0 04 34 31 6, v er si on 1 22 N ov 2 00 9

Variational Approaches to Digital Image Zooming a Thesis Submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Minnesota by Todd Cameron Wittman in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy

The purpose of this thesis is to discuss digital image resolution enhancement by variational methods and the associated computational issues. Two problems related to the basic zooming problem are also studied: super-resolution and quantized deconvolution. Digital zooming is important for mundane computing activities such as web browsing as well as sophisticated applications like satellite image...

Digital Surface Regularization by Normal Vector Field Alignment

Digital objects and digital surfaces are isothetic structures per se. Such surfaces are thus not adapted to direct visualization with isothetic quads, or to many geometry processing methods. We propose a new regularization technique to construct a piecewise smooth quadrangulated surface from a digital surface. More formally we propose a variational formulation which efficiently regularizes digi...

Feasibility of detecting and localizing radioactive source using image processing and computational geometry algorithms

We consider the problem of finding the localization of radioactive source by using data from a digital camera. In other words, the camera could help us to detect the direction of radioactive rays radiation. Therefore, the outcome could be used to command a robot to move toward the true direction to achieve the source. The process of camera data is performed by using image processing and computa...

Approximation of Surfaces by Normal Meshes

This thesis introduces a novel geometry processing pipeline based on unconstrained spherical parameterization and normal remeshing. We claim three main contributions: First we show how to increase the stability of Normal Mesh construction, while speeding it up by decomposing the process into two stages: parameterization and remeshing. We show that the remeshing step can be seen as resampling un...
